Candle DIY: Inspired by Jasmine Sambac & Marigold

Candle DIY

One of the most memorable moments in India was going to a local flower market. It was the first time I ventured out completely alone, and for good cause – I wanted to smell the famous Indian jasmine! So I ordered an Uber and we drove across the city to one of the most famous flower markets in Mumbai.

Upon arrival, I was expecting to see neatly organised stalls along the street that would be selling all sorts of flowers. I couldn’t have been more wrong! There were no stalls but a series of little shops. And a LOT of people. It was chaotic, noisy and the atmosphere was buzzing. Three words: I loved it!

At first, it didn’t seem like much of a market, and frankly I was a little disappointed. But then, I went inside one of those small shops and was mind blown. There were baskets and baskets of vividly coloured flowers, tuberose, and of course, jasmine. The jasmine there was nothing like I’ve ever smelled before. It was pure heaven to the senses, a rush of joy and sense of wellbeing. It’s really something to experience. That being said, if India seems a little far away, Jo Malone’s Jasmine Sambac & Marigold fragrance is the closest scent that encapsulates this special memory.

Ever since smelling the freshly picked jasmine flowers at the market, I’ve been wanting to create a candle around this scent. Inspired by Jo Malone’s Jasmine Sambac & Marigold fragrance, this candle is a celebration of the jasmine flower. If you’re into white floral scents, you will certainly enjoy this candle!

What to Expect

To put it simply, this candle smells of jasmine in all it’s glory. After all, it’s almost 60% of the formula! The candle doesn’t impart the animalic facet of jasmine, rather, it reveals the softer and fruitier side of the flower. A touch of lemon brightens and lifts the fragrance, whilst the addition of benzoin resin compliments the fruity facet of both jasmine and ylang ylang.

Candle Supplies

• Soy wax flakes

• Fragrance oil (6-12% wax weight)

• Candle wick

• Adhesive sticker or tape

• Mason jar

• Weighing balance

• Thermometer

• Metal pouring pitcher

• Saucepan

Fragrance Formula

Top: 16% lemon

Heart: 58% jasmine, 7% ylang ylang

Instructions

1. Weigh soy wax in a metal pouring pitcher.

2. Put pitcher into a double boiler and allow the wax to melt completely. For the double boiler, add enough water into a saucepan to cover a third of the metal pitcher. Place metal pitcher into the saucepan and heat over medium heat.

3. While waiting for the soy wax to melt, stick the wick on the bottom of the mason jar using an adhesive sticker or tape.

4. Prepare fragrance oil mix (see above formula).

4. Heat wax until temperature reaches 85°C (this may vary depending on the type of wax used).

5. Add fragrance oil to the wax and mix thoroughly.

7. Leave the candle to sit overnight at room temperature.
