Candle DIY: Inspired by Salt Caramel

DIY Scented Candle

It’s officially the festive season and I can’t think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit than with a new scented DIY candle project. I love getting crafty during this time of year and get so excited to put up the Christmas tree, drink mulled wine and bake a TON of cookies. I’m also constantly burning all sorts of candles around the flat and take even more pleasure in making them. With that in mind, this month’s scented DIY candle is inspired by Shay & Blue’s Salt Caramel fragrance. This new candle captures the essence of autumn, think colourful leaves, apple caramel desserts and cosy afternoons by the fireplace. As always it’s super easy to create (instructions are below) and makes a great gift for Christmas!

What to Expect

This candle is undeniably a warm, fluffy vanilla cloud dream. Imagine a smooth vanilla buttercream frosting with just the right amount of sweetness. Don’t expect an overdose of sugar though, as a hint of cacao wrapped in sandalwood makes the vanilla note more round and sophisticated. It reminds me of that snug and fuzzy feeling that you get from wearing your biggest chunky sweater (and luckily for us, this year’s autumn/winter fashion is all about oversized sweaters!).

To give the candle a little festive twist, I added a touch of green apple. Its tanginess balances out the sweetness of vanilla and brings a crisp facet like the crunch of leaves under your feet. This delicious blend brings me straight back to autumn in Canada where I would binge on Caramel Apple Pops (probably one of the best American candy finds!) whilst studying in the park amongst the fiery red and orange colored trees.

Candle Supplies

• Soy wax flakes

• Fragrance oil (6-12% wax weight)

• Candle wick

• Adhesive sticker or tape

• Mason jar

• Weighing balance

• Thermometer

• Metal pouring pitcher

• Saucepan

Fragrance Formula

Top: 8% apple

Heart: 5% chocolate

Base: 80% vanilla, 7% sandalwood

Instructions

1. Weigh soy wax in a metal pouring pitcher.

2. Put pitcher into a double boiler and allow the wax to melt completely. For the double boiler, add enough water into a saucepan to cover a third of the metal pitcher. Place metal pitcher into the saucepan and heat over medium heat.

3. While waiting for the soy wax to melt, stick the wick on the bottom of the mason jar using an adhesive sticker or tape.

4. Prepare fragrance oil mix (see above formula).

4. Heat wax until temperature reaches 85°C (this may vary depending on the type of wax used).

5. Add fragrance oil to the wax and mix thoroughly.

6. Remove from heat. Once temperature reaches 60°C, carefully pour melted wax and fragrance oil into a mason jar.

7. Leave the candle to sit overnight at room temperature.
