Perfume Review: Diptyque Benjoin Bohème

Benjoin Bohème Diptyque

It’s officially autumn again and the colder months mean switching up my fragrance wardrobe to cosier scents! Who doesn’t love sweet, warm, woody and ambery scents? Today’s blog post is about a beloved oriental scent from Diptyque: Benjoin Bohème. Benjoin Bohème is part of Diptyque’s Exclusives Collection, which celebrates ingredients brought back from many travels. Benjoin Bohème is inspired by “the scent of the resident of 34 boulevard Saint-Germain, a British dandy or Latin Bohemian.” It’s a warm, ambery scent that has an artistic twist to it. A true Diptyque masterpiece, it’s a must-have in your autumn/winter fragrance wardrobe.

Key Notes

Benzoin, Peru balsam, angelica seeds, sandalwood, patchouli

Olfactive Classification: Oriental

What to Expect

As the name suggests, Benjoin Bohème is a beautiful oriental scent with a bohemian vibe to it. This fragrance is smooth, creamy and warm. It opens with a citrusy top note that quickly gives way to a noble sandalwood note. This sandalwood note will remain throughout the development of the perfume. There’s also a mysterious smoky facet that is coupled with the warm sweetness of benzoin. A light vanilla effect. The dry down is dominated by sandalwood and patchouli intertwined with golden ambery notes. The woods bring a dusty, powdery and very bohemian personality to the perfume.

My Olfactive Journey

Benjoin Bohème Diptyque

Benjoin Bohème immediately takes me to the most bohemian and artistic city in Europe, Barcelona. Breathtaking architecture of all types, colourful mosaics, and the scent of burning sandalwood fills the air…

There’s a most unusual rooftop terrace tucked away in the Latin quarter. Dusty antique carpets are interspersed across brick red, black, and white coloured tiles. A bed of colourful cushions and a finely carved wooden table lay before me. Lanterns, incense burners and trinkets of all sorts decorate the space.

Bohemian plates & glasses

The golden light of the afternoon sun reflects on the hand-painted glass windows behind me. It’s balmy and warm, just like the liquid amber in Benjoin Bohème. There’s a sense of ease and comfort.

As the perfume continues to unfold, it reveals an undeniable artistic character. I feel as if I’m in Pablo Picasso’s apartment in the early days of his budding career. I imagine it to be a little dusty, paint is perhaps peeling off the walls and more importantly there is a myriad of sketches and paintings spread across the room.

From the little window, I catch a glimpse of Gaudi’s masterpieces coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes. A little further and I can see the vibrant colours Palau de la Musica. What a view… It’s a place full of charm and liberated artistic expression, just like this perfume.
