Candle DIY: Inspired by Bronze Goddess

Coconut Scented Candle

Continuing this month’s exploration of Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche, I’m excited to share with you a scented candle DIY project to follow on last week’s dessert recipe. The candle is by no means a copy of the perfume, rather, it takes inspiration from the general aura and feel of it. Basically, if you want your home to smell like the beach… and a pina colada… for as long as possible (as I do), then this candle is for you!

What to Expect

The initial thought that comes to mind when smelling this candle is the delicious creaminess of coconut. Yes, coconut is definitely a trending ingredient here, and it won’t be the last of it! However, it’s not too overpowering as it’s balanced with citrus fruits and a white floral note. For the citrus accord, I used lemon and bergamot. I find that bergamot helps boost the lemon note and adds a sparkling freshness. To add a touch of sophistication, I opted for jasmine, which brings a transparent, clean and delicate facet. Finally, the scent also has a warm, balmy feel to it, which reminds me of lazy late afternoon days spent by the beach.

Coconut Scented Candle

Candles are probably one of the easiest things to do from the comfort of your own home. They’re super quick to make and only a few basic items are needed. That’s why I will be listing all the supplies AND the complete perfume formula so that you can have your very own beach-inspired candle. I mean, who doesn’t love a good DIY?

One of my friends from perfumery school gave me a great cheat sheet on how to make candles and has allowed me to share it with you. This guide is simple and I’m really pleased with the outcome – the candle burns consistently without any tunnelling or black smoke.

Un vrai jeu d’enfant!

Candle Supplies

• Soy wax flakes

• Fragrance oil (6-12% wax weight)

• Candle wick

• Adhesive sticker or tape

• Mason jar

• Weighing balance

• Thermometer

• Metal pouring pitcher

• Saucepan

Fragrance Formula

Top: 2% lemon, 1% bergamot

Heart: 60% jasmine, 16% coconut

Base: 13% sandalwood, 8% benzoin

Instructions

1. Weigh soy wax in a metal pouring pitcher.

2. Put pitcher into a double boiler and allow the wax to melt completely. For the double boiler, add enough water into a saucepan to cover a third of the metal pitcher. Place metal pitcher into the saucepan and heat over medium heat.

3. While waiting for the soy wax to melt, stick the wick on the bottom of the mason jar using an adhesive sticker or tape.

4. Prepare fragrance oil mix (see above formula).

4. Heat wax until temperature reaches 85°C (this may vary depending on the type of wax used).

5. Add fragrance oil to the wax and mix thoroughly.

6. Remove from heat. Once temperature reaches 60°C, carefully pour melted wax and fragrance oil into a mason jar.

7. Leave the candle to sit overnight at room temperature.

8. Decorate the mason jar if you wish to do so. For this candle, I used palm leaves and some string. Warning: the string is highly flammable and was used for demonstration purposes only. Please don’t burn your house down!
